The Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex has one of the largest and most active dog rescue communities in the United States. Hundreds of dedicated rescue organizations — from large municipal shelters to small volunteer-run breed-specific rescues — work tirelessly every day to save dogs, find loving foster homes, and connect families with their perfect canine companion. If you're considering adding a dog to your family, adoption is always a wonderful option.
Municipal shelters like Dallas Animal Services and Fort Worth Animal Care & Control handle stray and surrendered dogs and are often at capacity, making adoptions urgent. Private rescues and humane societies operate independently with volunteer foster networks. Breed-specific rescues exist for almost every breed imaginable — from Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds to Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, Pit Bulls, and everything in between. Senior dog rescues specialize in placing older dogs who often have the hardest time finding homes.
Most DFW rescue organizations have an online adoption application process. You'll typically be asked about your living situation, experience with dogs, activity level, and what you're looking for in a dog. An adoption counselor will help match you with a compatible dog. Adoption fees typically range from $50–$350 and usually include spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchip, and a health check.
Even if you're not ready to adopt, you can support DFW rescue organizations by fostering (providing a temporary home for a dog in need), volunteering at events or shelters, donating financially or with supplies, or simply sharing adoptable dogs on social media to expand their reach.
